Talking About My Jeneration

ImageJeneration.org aims to engage Jewish young adults, in the UK, in new ways and on their own terms

  • A space where you can expand your social networks, making connections with others wherever they may be; geographically or Jewishly.
  • A space where you can find out what is going on, publicise your events and let others know about cool stuff you've come across.
  • A space for expression and debate, a platform where your voice will be heard. Here you can engage with contemporary issues and have your say, sharing a desire to make a difference to the world we live in.

This new site has been created by two former Joomla! Core Team members, Brian Teeman and Arno Zijlstra. The original site design was created by an outside agency in photoshop and skillfully translated into Joomla! by Arno. There were many design issues for Arno to address not the least of which was to find a way to display all the module headers as graphics without effecting the performance of the site. Uniquely Arno achieved this by placing "all" the images into one file and then using the module class suffix to select the correct portion of the image with css.

The aims for the site required a full featured "What's On" section that was both visually appealing and easy to use. The closest fit was "Eventlist" from schlu.net although it only offered a partial set of the required functionality. Brian has rewritten the code adding numerous features not available in the standard download.

These include:-

  • Events in multiple categories
  • Tag an event as "featured"
  • Enter short and long descriptions for each event
  • Convert all event dates from text to dynamic images created with css
  • Transform all event and location images to ensure a consistent style by dynamically converting them with javascript

The site uses so many components, modules and mambots that its not possible to list them all here but a full list is available at http://www.jeneration.org/index.php?option=com_joomlacredits&Itemid=155

Many of them required patches either to add functionality or to resolve conflicts. All of these patches have been supplied upstream.

We would like to pay special thanks to Beat and the Community Builder team for all their help and hard work and to Christoph Lukes (schlu.net) for always being on hand to explain the code in "eventlist".
